Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books–but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. We have lived among you without you knowing.
But they know.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.
I am Number Four.
I am next.
Being a person who isn’t hard to please when it comes to a good old sci-fi novel, this book almost won me over with the author taking the name/species of his characters as I thought it was very creative and fun. I first watched the movie of this some time ago and then watched it again recently and it automatically drew me in much more than the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, so I thought, as any book worm would do, “I need to buy the book”. So I did. The main character, who’s name is ‘Number 4’ is the 4th of 9 aliens who left their home planet when it was under attack and came to this earth seeking refuge. Each person has their own individual set of powers that develop when they get to a certain age, which are meant to be used to kill those who ruined their planet of Lorien and stop them from ruining their new home Earth and its inhabitants. This novel had just about everything – death, romance, action and even a cute little Beagle. Despite being a big fan of fantasy/ sci-fi novels, I haven’t particularly read that many books where the main plot/characters revolve around aliens, but Lore made these characters super exciting and left you wanting to find out about the others. Overall the ‘aliens’ are normal but only to a certain extent where would begin to wonder whether or not theses beings could actually live among us. Ooo creepy!
Number 4 (who’s a fake name is John) at a first glance seems like your stereotypical american teenage boy – always looking for a new adventure, socializing with his friends and of course being super attractive and popular. Until we discover that he has developed glowing hands, telekinesis and super human strength, leading us to believe that he is in fact a little out of the ordinary and is most likely, yes you guessed it, an alien. His friends however – Sam and Sarah – are your actually your everyday American teenagers, the nerd boy and the ‘girl next door’ type who loves photography and art. Both play a huge part in the story and are very valued characters in my eyes.
To keep the stereotypes coming, there is also your everyday typical bully who thinks he’s god’s gift, but he does eventually take a turn for the better and becomes a pretty alright guy.
You may be thinking, ” gosh all these stereotypes, sounds awful” but trust me when I say that it does work perfectly and is probably not what you are expecting with all the twists and turn and danger around every corner. Very exciting.
This series is still ongoing today and I am extremely looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series, hoping and praying that they are as good as this one is. I’m pretty certain they will be.
